Eight years — that is the time span between writing this introduction and writing the introduction to the book Diaries of a Correspondent – 700 Days in Benghazi. During those years, the Libyan army succeeded in completely defeating terrorism and thwarting the plot to turn Libya into a dark hub for terrorist groups of all kinds and names. Reconstruction began in both the East and the West, and the economic scene took the lead, replacing the military one. Despite the continued political disagreements among Libyan factions, the phase of liberating the country from terrorism has become history. The “Operation Dignity” military campaign evolved into a comprehensive “Dignity Revolution” — politically, economically, and socially. Moreover, a strong army was built, now recognized within African and international military rankings. As time passed, the book Diaries of a Correspondent – 700 Days in Benghazi became an important historical record of that era — a documented reference that captured what took place. It began to be used by researchers and postgraduate students across the Arab world as a trusted source. With the release of the third edition of the book came the dream of translating it into English and French — to serve as a “witness to the era,” a document, and a reference available to readers worldwide and to university libraries in the West. Out of respect for the reader, it is important to note that not a single word or meaning has been omitted from the translated edition — even the book’s introduction appears exactly as it was written in 2017 for the first edition. However, a decision was made to add a distinctive and exclusive opening chapter that would bring real value to the translated edition — an interview with the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan Army, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar. In this conversation, we navigate with him through the details of the “Dignity Revolution,” asking all the questions about what happened during those years — how it began, how it continued, and how he envisions the future. It is an exclusive interview, published for the first time in the opening chapter of Diaries of a Correspondent – 700 Days in Benghazi.
